Mirroring the wide, open sight lines of South Dakota’s grasslands, this Sioux Falls Prairie house pays homage to its local landscape. TAP Architecture was involved in every aspect of this design – from interpreting the client’s needs to imagining the endless possibilities for this home.

TAP Architecture took on an approach inspired by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie designs – placing a strong emphasis on the horizontal, and focusing on low-pitched hipped roof lines that embrace the horizon. This home is designed to be of the land, not just on it. Massive stone and stucco piers are used universally to provide roof support and vertical emphasis, along with tall casement windows with horizontal sill trim wrapping the vernacular. The result was a 6-bedroom, 7,000 square feet home, which was completed in 2018.

In bold colors emphasizing the home’s unique proportions, the color scheme contrasts the native landscape. Inside, there is a sports court tucked under the garage – with a 20-feet-tall ceiling designed for racquetball, basketball and other sports. We specifically designed this Sioux Falls Prairie home so all formal spaces would have expansive views of the golf course, with an open, two-level great room built for the best views, entertaining and eating. A lower level walk-out provides even more opportunities to enjoy the family’s backyard.
