REVITALIZED LAKE RETREAT
Category
One of the oldest cabins on Green Lake, which has been in the same family for over 100 years, has recently undergone a revitalization. The original cabin had a footprint of 24 by 28 feet and featured a compartmentalized floor plan that included a kitchen, living and dining area, one bedroom, and a small bathroom.
The first addition occurred in the early 1980s, adding another bedroom and a larger bathroom to accommodate more family and friends. In the 1990s, a second addition introduced a porch breezeway and a bedroom suite, along with a loft space above, to meet the growing family’s needs.
Both additions were updated to reflect their respective periods. However, the original cabin remained untouched, with wood panel walls and low ceilings that were cozy but not aligned with the current needs of the family.
BEFORE
That’s where we came in. TAP Architecture was commissioned to design, remodel, and update the original cabin. Completely redesigning the lakeside spaces into an open floor plan and incorporating a vaulted ceiling, capturing space from the existing attic. This also included a new shed dormer with glass windows and doors along the entire facade, providing expansive views of the lakeshore. The new space features an updated kitchen, dining area, and living room, along with a new entry area for better flow. An additional bathroom suite was added to the 1980s addition to accommodate overnight family and guests.
With a family spanning four generations and over 100 years, the cabin has served as a place for gathering, leisure, and retreat. Over that time, three remodels have taken place, all aimed at ensuring that the growing family can continue to create memories and enjoy fellowship for the next 100 years.
