TRANSFORMED FRENCH REVIVAL

Taking place in 3 separate phases over the course of 10 years – the renovations to this house were inspired by the client’s changing family dynamic. Each time the owners of this Transformed French Revival transitioned to the next stage in their lives, TAP Architecture was commissioned to realize the potential of their Sioux Falls, South Dakota home.

The client initially reached out to add interest to their house’s exterior and make use of a backyard that was on a steep hillside, rendering it almost unusable for outdoor activities. In a style reminiscent of old-world architecture, we incorporated French details throughout the property. We also designed stone stairs leading to prominent, multi-leveled terraces – adding form and function by eliminating the steep backyard hill. TAP Architecture envisioned this entire design, from the greater backyard design to the smallest architectural details.

Years later, we converted an unfinished basement into a variety of different spaces. We designed a lower level kitchenette and bar area with a French sliding patio door spanning the entire width of the room – which creates an uninhibited connection to the outdoor terrace. This design makes entertaining seamless from the indoors to outdoors. We also added a sun room and a custom arts and crafts room for the entire family, with a bright chandelier as the focal point. Finally, we added a mothers-in-law suite for frequent visits.

We also updated the main level kitchen by redesigning the floor plan, adding a family room directly off the kitchen for increased ease of entertaining. We incorporated a formal morning eating area, which opens to the back terraces and is outlined by large bay windows. In addition, we built a private library next to the master suite.

As the client’s children grew older, we were commissioned to add a private, second-story playroom above the garage to serve as a dedicated space for the kids to play. The spacious living room allows the kids to watch movies, play music, compete at pool and ping-pong, and visit with friends. There’s also a loft accessible by a ship’s ladder, which is perfect for additional sleepover space.
